Whether AXA Health is good for you is a narrower question than whether its reviews are good, and the narrow one is what you are actually deciding: would an AXA policy, set up the way you would buy it, pay for the thing you want cover for, and how does it compare with rival policies built to an identical specification? A broker can price exactly that at several insurers side by side, and a short note left on the form on this page puts one in touch with you. Reviews come at it from the other end, and AXA Health does not sell one fixed thing: two members reading the same handbook can hold different cancer levels, one with the mental health option and one without, so a delighted reviewer and a furious one may each be describing their own cover correctly.

This page quotes no customer; it reads AXA's own wording instead.

AXA Health reviews: first, check which AXA is being reviewed

AXA is one name over many businesses, and a review site can pool them, so an AXA healthcare review first has to be about the right one. AXA's Personal Health membership handbook carries two names on its publisher line, AXA Health and AXA PPP healthcare, so a review filed under AXA PPP is likely to concern the same insurer, under earlier terms.

  • AXA's other insurance. A score for plain "AXA" can be dominated by motor, home or travel customers.
  • AXA outside the UK. As far as we can tell, "Zusatzversicherung" and "Zahnversicherung" are German terms for supplementary and dental insurance, and "rawat jalan", which turns up beside "AXA Good Health", is Indonesian for out-patient care. This page deals with AXA Health's UK Personal Health policy, not with products sold abroad or anything called AXA Good Health.
  • AXA XL. As we understand it, this is the group's commercial insurance arm, which would explain why it turns up beside medical malpractice; its customers are likely to be businesses.
  • A pin on a map. AXA Health London reviews, and the Bristol and Leicester ones, are most likely Google reviews pinned to an address. Such a review may concern a clinic or office rather than the insurer.
  • Cover through work. Some AXA private medical insurance reviews will come from employees whose cover settings were chosen by the company. Their account of service may carry over to you; their account of a claim may not. There is more on this in AXA Health for employees.
  • Other AXA plans. The handbook quoted here is for Personal Health; if a review names AXA Health Start or another plan, its cover may differ, so weigh the review against that plan's own terms.

The general checks for any insurer's reviews are in the site's guide to reading health insurance reviews; this page does something narrower, reading AXA's own wording for the lines a good or a bad experience would turn on.

Why AXA Health reviews disagree: one handbook, read two ways

Every AXA quotation below comes from one source, AXA Health's Personal Health membership handbook of October 2024, as read here on 4 September 2026. The copy cited sits on an intermediary's website rather than AXA's, and a later edition may be worded differently, so check each line against the handbook that comes with your quote.

Where the handbook is generous

On second opinions it says: "If you would like a second opinion we will help you find an alternative specialist we'll pay in full" (page 10). Towards an external prosthesis it pays "Up to £5,000 for the lifetime of your membership", and the same entry adds: "If you have an excess, we will not take this off this cash payment" (page 5). For a member receiving end-of-life care it describes "a charitable donation paid direct to a registered hospice" of "£100 for each night" (page 24). Lines like these only matter in particular circumstances, and a star rating is unlikely to show them to you.

Where the handbook is narrower than a buyer may expect

Other entries could produce a complaint with AXA following its wording exactly.

  • Primary care. Membership "provides access to the AXA Doctor at Hand service for video or phone consultations" but "does not cover any other primary care services, such as any services that could be provided by GPs, dentists and opticians" (page 12). A member who expected a face-to-face GP visit or a check-up to be paid for has met that sentence.
  • Scans. CT, MRI and PET scans are "Paid in full at a scanning centre, or hospital listed as a scanning centre, in our Directory of Hospitals", and the entry ends: "A specialist must refer you" (page 4). That sentence describes one route to full payment; a scan a GP orders directly, or at a centre the directory omits, is not something it settles.
  • Cancer. "There are two levels of cancer cover with Personal Health. They are Comprehensive Cancer Cover and NHS Cancer Support." (page 5). Two members asking the same cancer question can get different answers, so ask which level your quote assumes and what it pays.
  • Mental health. In-patient and day-patient psychiatric treatment is paid "as shown in the Mental Health Option table" for members who have that option (page 18). What that table pays is a question to ask before you buy. A page on AXA Health mental health cover is planned.
  • Physiotherapy. It sits in a Therapies Option table whose session wording reads two ways; the clause and both readings appear on getting an AXA Health quote.

Side by side, these explain how AXA's reviews can contradict each other with nobody lying: a pleased member and an angry one may hold different cancer levels, options or routes to a specialist. Which one you would resemble is set by the specification on your quote, visible before you pay; a broker can lay it out for AXA and price the same one elsewhere, and that request goes through the form on this page.

Is AXA Health good? Four tests, taken in order

No league table follows, since ranking insurers would be a recommendation, but there is an order to ask things in.

  1. Is it the firm you think, and how do its disputes end? The insurer's legal name is on your documents, and the FCA register shows whether that firm is authorised. Complaints figures for named firms come from the Financial Ombudsman Service; they count disputes that reached it, not satisfaction. Both are free to check before you buy.
  2. What is AXA like to deal with? Here Trustpilot and Google reviews earn their place. Give more weight to recent accounts, to a problem several people describe independently, and to a claim being authorised or paid over a sales call.
  3. Does your version of the policy fit what you want it for? Reviews cannot settle this. Hold your reason for buying against the specification: which cancer level, whether the mental health and therapies options are on, which underwriting route, and whether what you care about is primary care, which the page 12 sentence leaves out. The handbook names four underwriting routes, quoted in our explainer on insurers and pre-existing conditions.
  4. How does it compare? The same specification priced at AXA and at two or three others is the comparison that means something, and choosing between insurers explains comparing quotes on one specification.

Before buying AXA: what to get in writing

Each closes a gap a review fills only with a stranger's experience. Take the list to AXA itself, or keep it for the broker's call, and write down what each says; the call is free.

  1. Which cancer level does the price assume, and what would the other change?
  2. Is the Mental Health Option included, and what does its table pay?
  3. Is the Therapies Option included, and how does the ten-session wording apply to my route in?
  4. Are the scanning centres and hospitals I would use in the Directory of Hospitals? Name them.
  5. On what underwriting basis is the price set, and how would that treat my history? Name the condition and the dates.
  6. Is anything I want, such as a GP seen in person, primary care outside the policy?
  7. Is the quote for Personal Health, and does a later handbook than October 2024 apply to it?

More questions about AXA Health's reputation

What is AXA Health's Trustpilot rating?

Ratings move, so check the current figure on Trustpilot itself. The AXA-specific trap is that one group name can sit behind more than one review profile, so a figure quoted to you may belong to AXA's motor or home business, or to a profile still under the AXA PPP name; establish whose it is before weighing the number.

Is AXA Health an insurance company, and is it private?

The handbook is AXA Health's own, written as the party that pays ("we'll pay in full"), and the cover it describes is private medical insurance; one of its cancer levels is nonetheless called NHS Cancer Support, so ask what that level pays and where.

Is Freedom Health Insurance part of AXA PPP?

Freedom's policyholder guide is published by Freedom Healthnet Limited, and the AXA handbook by AXA Health (AXA PPP healthcare): two different named publishers. Companies House lists each firm's owners if you want to check for a link. Freedom's wording is read on Freedom Health Insurance: reviews.

Can I get an ADHD diagnosis or neurodiversity assessment through AXA Health insurance?

Whether either is paid depends on the policy; the Mental Health Option sentence covers in-patient and day-patient psychiatric treatment and does not mention assessments, so ask where, if anywhere, one would be paid. A page on private health insurance and autism or additional needs is planned.

Does AXA Health cover fertility treatment or pregnancy?

Whether AXA pays towards either depends on the policy, so ask for the entry by name; the wider market is on private health insurance and pregnancy.

Does AXA Health insurance cover travel or travel vaccinations?

The handbook says: "We do not cover any costs for treatment you receive outside the UK, Channel Islands or Isle of Man" (page 30). Whether vaccinations are paid depends on the policy; the primary care sentence quoted earlier is the line to ask about. A page on private health insurance while travelling is planned.

How does an existing AXA member upload an invoice, change a name or use live chat?

Through AXA's member website and your membership documents; this site cannot reach your account. Claiming is covered in making an AXA Health claim.

What settles the question is not another review but the specification AXA would actually sell you, checked line by line against the handbook entries above. A broker can put that specification to AXA and to its rivals together, and asking costs nothing; the request reaches one from the form on this page.
