Asking for a Bupa quote is the easy part. The harder part is getting a figure you can actually judge: one where you know which cover it buys, which choices were made on your behalf, and what another insurer would want for the same thing. That is the decision this page is about. What Bupa charges you turns on your own details, so the figure itself only comes from a quote. If what you want is the figure itself, fill in the form on this page with a few details. It costs nothing, and the FCA-authorised broker who picks it up can price Bupa on your age, postcode and choices alongside other insurers in one conversation.

Bupa insurance quote: going to Bupa yourself or through a broker

"How do I get Bupa?" has two answers, and neither is wrong. You can approach Bupa yourself, which gets you Bupa's figure and nobody else's. Or you can ask a broker, who collects quotes from the insurers they deal with, Bupa among them where it is on their panel, and lays them out on matching terms. A broker does not cover the whole market, and going through one is not a promise of a lower figure. What changes is the work of comparison: one set of details instead of several, and one person to ask why two numbers differ.

Either way, a Bupa quote online or by phone is a price for one set of choices. Two people born on the same day can be offered very different figures because one picked a lower excess or a wider list of hospitals. People searching for a "Bupa quote tool" or estimate want a number before giving any details, and the next section gives a sense of the scale.

A Bupa quote estimate, and why it cannot carry Bupa's name

Bupa's figure for you comes from a quote, not from a page, but the market as a whole can be sketched. Purely as an indicative guide to UK pricing, not a Bupa price and not a quote, a single adult in their thirties buying middle-of-the-road cover is often looking at something like £30 to £60 monthly, while a single adult at or near 60 is more often in the region of £90 to £180 monthly, which is £1,080 to £2,160 over twelve months. Plenty of people fall outside those bands, and the bottom of one is not a promise. Other ages and households are on what UK cover costs on average.

Much of the distance inside those bands comes from settings rather than from the insurer:

  • The excess. A higher one usually brings the premium down. Bupa's By You policy guide (BINS 14718, 2024) works an example in which the excess is paid once in a policy year rather than on every claim (page 10); Bupa health insurance: excess takes that up.
  • The out-patient allowance. A lower limit generally lowers the premium, and leaves you paying for consultations and tests once it runs out. The same guide mentions the excess and the outpatient benefit allowance with the rider "if either of these apply to your policy" (page 7), so a policy may carry one, both or neither; why Bupa costs what it does quotes the sentence in full.
  • The hospital list. Fewer hospitals generally means a smaller premium. The hospitals on each Bupa list are not set out here; Bupa's hospital lists is the page for it.
  • The people covered. Your age and postcode, anyone added to the policy, and how medical history is underwritten.

So a useful request is never just "a Bupa quote". It is Bupa priced with the excess, out-patient limit and hospital list written on it, ideally at two settings, next to another insurer on identical ones. A broker can run those variations from one set of details, which is what this page's quote form is for.

What your medical history does to a Bupa quote

The price is half the answer. The other half is what the policy will refuse to pay for, and for most buyers that turns on medical history and the underwriting route chosen when the quote is made.

On this the Bupa guide is direct: conditions and symptoms you had before the policy started "aren't usually covered" (BINS 14718, page 11), and any special condition is set out in a written confirmation sent to the main member. Do insurers cover pre-existing conditions? quotes the clause in full and sets it against other insurers' wording. How that lands for you depends on the underwriting route, which Bupa health insurance: underwriting explains.

Separately, the same guide says treatment of chronic conditions isn't covered (page 28), so read the guide's full definition of "chronic", in the copy that comes with your quote, before relying on it. A reader searching "Bupa insurance asthma" is usually asking where a long-standing condition falls among these rules. How Bupa would treat any named condition is settled on your application, not on a page like this one. Raise it before you buy, and have the answer in writing; once you have sent the form, the broker who calls can explain how it is likely to be handled, at no charge.

Six things to have answered on any Bupa quote

There is no single right Bupa policy, so the useful thing is a short list for reading whichever one you are offered. Each item is something a quote can leave blank and a claim will later fill in for you.

  1. Which policy guide governs it? Everything Bupa-specific on this page comes from the Bupa By You guide. If your quote is for a product with another name, ask for its own guide before comparing it with anything here.
  2. What is the excess, and is it paid once a year? Ask for the amount in pounds, and what the premium would be one step higher.
  3. What out-patient cover is included? A figure, or "none", or "full". These are three different policies.
  4. Which hospitals can I use? Check the ones near you by name, not just the list's title.
  5. Which underwriting route, and what will be excluded? Name every condition you have been seen for and ask how each is treated.
  6. What is an add-on rather than core cover? Dental, for one: the guide excludes dental and oral treatment from core cover and offers Dental Cover 20 as an option, which Bupa dental cover covers.

Put the same six to a second insurer. Two quotes answer different questions until every line matches, and then the gap between them means something.

Bupa searches that are not about a UK policy

Some searches carrying Bupa's name reach this page but are not asking for a UK health insurance quote. "OSHC" and "OVHC" are Australian terms for overseas student and overseas visitor health cover, and "QLD" is Queensland. They are about cover bought in Australia, which this site does not deal with. Cover for people living outside the UK is a separate subject again, with its own page: Bupa international cover.

Searches naming a place or a specialist (Bupa Cheapside, Bupa Kent, a Windsor orthodontist, a dermatologist), or a switchboard or office, are after a contact rather than a price. Bupa itself is the place to ask.

Before you ask for a Bupa figure: short answers

Is Bupa good?

That depends on what you need it to pay for. What one Bupa policy guide says the cover includes and leaves out is on why Bupa costs what it does, and what customers report, on Bupa reviews.

Can you self-refer to Bupa through Direct Access?

The By You guide describes a Direct Access service for cancer, muscles, bones and joints, and mental health, under which you can call about symptoms without first getting a referral from a GP (page 6). The clause is quoted on why Bupa costs what it does. Ask whether it applies to the policy you are quoted for.

Which hospitals does Bupa cover?

That depends on the hospital list attached to the policy. Ask for the list by name with your quote and check the hospitals you would actually use; Bupa's hospital lists goes further.

Does Bupa cover Invisalign?

Not under the Bupa By You guide. Dental and oral treatment is excluded from core cover, and the Dental Cover 20 add-on lists orthodontic treatment among what it does not cover (pages 31 and 25). A different Bupa product could word this differently, so check the guide for yours.

Can I get Wegovy or Ozempic on Bupa?

The guide's exclusion 10 is headed "Cosmetic, reconstructive or weight loss treatment" (page 30), but whether it reaches weight-loss medicines depends on the policy, so the heading alone does not answer this. Ask Bupa in writing whether it would pay for one under your policy. What Bupa excludes has more.

Does Bupa cover ACL surgery, acupuncture or a vasectomy?

Whether each is eligible turns on the policy's general terms and your own history, so ask about each by name before you buy.

When can I start using Bupa?

That depends on the policy you are offered. Ask for the start date and any waiting period to be shown on the quote; waiting periods explained covers how they work across the market.

What is a Bupa Platinum consultant?

It is a label from Bupa's Guided Care option, under which Bupa offers you two or three consultants from its Open Referral Network; a Platinum consultant is one rated "good" or "excellent" by most of their Bupa patients. Bupa's Guided Care customer leaflet (BINS 06219, print code JAN26) adds that they are "always included in our Open Referral Network, and their fees are guaranteed not to exceed what you're covered for", while "Your policy excess and outpatient benefit allowances still apply".

Can I get a Bupa quote for my company?

A company scheme is priced on the group and runs on its own scheme documents; Bupa for small businesses picks it up. On tax, employer-paid cover normally counts as a benefit in kind for the employee; Bupa health insurance: tax treatment has the detail.

Work out which of the six questions above matter most to you, then take them into the quote itself. It takes a couple of minutes to complete the form on this page, and once it is in, a broker can price Bupa on exactly those lines and put a second insurer's figure on the same terms beside it.
