To cancel an Aviva Healthier Solutions health insurance policy, the policyholder tells Aviva by letter or by phone, and the date that notice lands decides what comes back. Within the 14-day cooling off period, provided nobody has claimed in it, premium paid during that window is refunded; after it, Aviva keeps what was paid for cover already given, and an annual payer is refunded for the rest of the policy year. If you are leaving Aviva for cover elsewhere rather than going without, put the move to an FCA-authorised broker first. Use the enquiry box here to book a free call-back, and the broker can go over what other insurers would charge while your Aviva cover still runs.
Which Aviva terms this page reads, and who can cancel
The Aviva clauses quoted here come from the Healthier Solutions terms and conditions, March 2026 edition (print code AV1590050_GEN6842_0326), downloaded from Aviva's own website on 21 October 2026, the edition current at the time of writing. Terms get reissued, so compare each paragraph below with the wording that came with your own quote or renewal letter, or ask the broker to check them against it when they ring back. Page numbers below are PDF pages; the printed ones are two lower.
The clauses on cancelling are written for the policyholder, the person who holds the policy, rather than for each member on it. If a partner or child on the policy needs to stay insured, ask Aviva what cancelling would mean for them before you choose a date.
How to cancel Aviva health insurance: letter, phone, and the online question
Aviva's "Cancelling the policy" section (page 33) says the policyholder can cancel "by notifying our customer service department in writing" at Aviva Health UK Limited, Unit 1a, Hampshire Corporate Park, Templars Way, Eastleigh, Hampshire SO53 3RY, "or by calling us on 0800 092 4590". It adds: "You are advised to call our customer service helpline to discuss your options before taking this step." Contact details can change, so check the number and address against your own policy documents before you use them.
People searching for how to cancel Aviva health insurance online usually want a button; the clause names a letter and a phone call. Whether Aviva will take notice through your online account or by email is worth asking it directly, or you can send the form here and raise it with the broker who rings, free of charge. Whichever route you use, ask for the end date and any refund to be confirmed in writing, and keep a note of the day and time you gave notice.
What comes back depends on when you cancel
Inside the cooling off period
The cooling off right lets the policyholder cancel "for any reason within 14 days of purchasing the policy or receiving the policy documents, whichever is the later". No reason is needed, and the clock runs from the later of the two dates: a policy bought on the 1st whose documents arrive on the 4th can be cancelled under this rule until the 18th.
The refund carries a condition: "Provided no claims have been made during the cooling off period we will refund any premium already paid during that time." Once a claim has been made in those 14 days, that promise no longer applies. The wording covers premium paid within the window, so if you have paid for a longer stretch, ask Aviva what happens to the rest.
After the cooling off period
Later on, the policyholder "may cancel the policy after the cooling off period, but we will not refund any premiums that have been paid for cover up to the cancellation date." The paragraph that follows deals with people who paid for the year up front: "If the policyholder has paid an annual premium, we will refund the premium that has been paid for the time that the policy is no longer in place (from the cancellation date to the end of the policy year)." Months of cover already had are not refunded; an annual payment is returned for the stretch from the cancellation date to the end of the policy year. Ask Aviva for the refund figure before you settle on a date.
Monthly payers work differently. The premiums clause (page 31) says "each monthly premium payment is for one month’s cover", and that Aviva will collect payments due "unless the policyholder tells us to cancel the policy in time for us to stop collecting the payment". Timing is the point: notice has to reach Aviva early enough to stop the next collection. How many days that takes in practice, and whether a payment already taken can come back, are questions a broker can answer free on the call-back.
Because the date you pick matters more than the day you decide, price the alternative first if cost is why you are leaving. Through the form, an FCA-authorised broker can set comparable cover from the insurers it works with beside what you pay Aviva; the request takes a few minutes, and you can then fix an end date knowing what you are moving to.
Leaving at renewal: the policy renews itself unless you tell Aviva
The renewal part (page 32) says "The policy lasts for one year and (if we still offer Healthier Solutions) we will automatically renew it unless you notify us that you do not wish to renew." Silence therefore means another year. Aviva says it sends renewal documents before the renewal date "in order to give you time to decide whether to renew the policy or cancel it", so the renewal pack is the moment to decide, not the day cover ends.
Aviva may also change the terms at renewal. If it does, it says it will let you know before the next renewal date, and "If you decide to cancel the policy as a result of such changes, you must let us know." The job is yours: a changed policy you do not want is not cancelled by being ignored. If you pay monthly, the premiums clause also lets you change the payment frequency at the renewal date. How far ahead of renewal your notice must arrive is a question a broker can answer, free, when they call back, using the renewal date on your schedule.
The price side of renewal, including how a claim moves your discount, is on why Aviva premiums rise, and the general renewal calendar is on the renewal period page.
When Aviva ends the policy, and what happens if the policyholder dies
The cancellation section also covers the opposite direction (page 34). If a premium goes unpaid, "the policy will automatically be cancelled", though Aviva "will reinstate the cover if the premium is paid within 45 days of its due date, subject to claims experience and the approval of our underwriters". Stopping a direct debit without telling Aviva is therefore a way of ending cover, but a messy one, and reinstatement is not guaranteed.
Aviva says "We will not cancel the policy because of eligible claims made by any member." It may cancel back to the original start date where the policyholder did not take reasonable care to give complete and accurate answers to its questions, and where a claim by or for the policyholder is fraudulent it may cancel back to the date of the fraudulent act and keep all premiums. Aviva also keeps the option of withdrawing Healthier Solutions altogether at your renewal date. If the policyholder dies, the policy is not automatically cancelled: it transfers to the spouse or partner or the eldest child over 18, subject to their agreeing to continue it and accept its terms.
If cancelling is the first step of a move
Ending cover before the next is confirmed can leave a gap, and a new insurer may look at your medical history afresh. The order of events, and the terms that can carry across, are set out in how to change medical insurance. Other insurers write their own cancellation rules: how to cancel private health insurance sets Aviva's wording beside Vitality's, and Bupa and Vitality have their own pages.
Cancel Aviva private health insurance: other questions
Can you cancel Aviva health insurance at any time?
Yes. The policyholder can cancel during the cooling off period or after it, mid-year or at renewal; what changes with the date is the refund. At renewal the policy carries on unless you tell Aviva you do not want it.
Is there a fee for cancelling Aviva health insurance?
The cancellation section on page 33 does not mention a fee, but it does say premiums for cover already provided are not refunded after the cooling off period. Whether any deduction applies to an annual refund is one to put to Aviva.
What if I cancel and then want Aviva cover again?
Starting again would be a new application, and how Aviva would treat your medical history second time round is something the broker can explain for free on the call-back.
If you are cancelling to move, the next step is to hand over your policy details through the call-back form here, and a broker rings back at no charge with options to set beside your Aviva terms before cover stops.
