You can cancel a Bupa By You health insurance policy at any time, by phone, letter or email, and Bupa refunds any premiums you have paid for the period after your cover ends. Inside the first 21 days, if nobody on the policy has claimed, the refund is the whole year's premium. Both rules come from Bupa's policy guide, and the date you choose for leaving decides which one applies. If the aim is to switch rather than to be uninsured, get the switch priced before you give notice: send the form in and a broker will ring without charging you, to weigh your Bupa terms against other insurers'.
Cancelling Bupa within 21 days: the whole year's premium back
The full refund sits in the "How your cover can end" part of the guide (Bupa By You health insurance policy guide, BINS 14718, © Bupa 2024, page 41, read on Bupa's own site on 4 September 2026). If you cancel "within 21 days of receiving your policy documents, or your cover start date, whichever date is later and you or your dependants' haven't claimed during this period", Bupa will "refund all the premiums you've paid in respect for your and/or their cover for that year".
Three conditions sit in that sentence. The clock starts on the later of two dates: the day your documents arrive, or the cover start date shown on your membership certificate. The refund is of the premiums for that year, not only the latest month's. And a claim by you or a dependant during the period takes the full refund away, so check with anyone else on the policy before you count on it.
How to cancel Bupa after 21 days, and what comes back
After the first three weeks you are not tied in until renewal. The same page says you can end your cover, and that of anyone else on your policy, "at any time by calling us on 0345 609 0777, writing to us or emailing us at consumer.cancellations@bupa.com." Those are the details as printed in the 2024 guide; contact details change, so check them against your most recent Bupa paperwork before you use them. The money rule follows straight after: "We'll refund any premiums you've paid for the period after your cover ends."
So a cancellation part-way through the year returns the unused stretch, not the year. Whether Bupa has a cancellation form or an online route, and whether a cancellation fee comes off that refund, are worth settling before you pick an end date; ask the broker to look into it when they ring, which costs nothing.
Whichever route you use, ask Bupa to confirm the end date and the refund figure in writing. A letter or an email leaves a dated record of when you gave notice; a phone call does not.
Is there a Bupa renewal cooling-off period? The 28-day right to leave
A Bupa By You policy "is for one year's insurance" and renews automatically each year while you keep paying, unless Bupa closes the product or uses its own right to cancel (page 41). The renewal date, defined on page 50, is either each anniversary of your cover start date or a "common renewal date" tied to the month you joined; the guide says to contact Bupa if you are unsure which is yours.
The 28 days that matter to someone thinking of leaving are on page 43, and they hang on a change Bupa makes. Bupa can change the terms, premiums, discounts and cover at your renewal date, and says it will write "at least 28 days before the renewal date". The clause then reads: "If you don't accept any of the changes you can cancel your Bupa By You health insurance policy within 28 days of the date on which the change takes effect, or 28 days of Bupa letting you know about the change, whichever is later."
That is a right to cancel when you reject a change, counted from the later of those two dates. It is not a notice period you owe Bupa: the clause on ending your cover, quoted above, lets you end it at any time. Reading the renewal notice itself, and what to check in it, is on the Bupa renewal page.
A renewal letter carrying a new price is the natural moment to look elsewhere, because most of what a broker needs is printed on it. Put those details into the form and a broker rings you, free, with Bupa's renewal set next to matching cover from other insurers.
When the main member leaves: dependants, add-ons and treatment under way
Ending the main member's cover ends the family's. A "Need to know" box on page 42 says: "If your cover ends for any reason, the cover for any dependants will also end." A partner or child who should stay insured needs a policy of their own starting the day yours stops, so settle their cover before you fix your date.
Add-ons can go without the main policy. Page 42 applies the same 21-day full refund to add-ons cancelled in that window with no claim, and after it an add-on can be ended "at any time", with premiums refunded for the period after it ends. If cost is the reason for leaving, changing the excess is another lever, covered on the Bupa excess page.
Treatment that is booked, or part-way through, when cover ends is the harder question: how the sessions after your end date would be paid for, by Bupa or by a new insurer, needs settling with the broker, free of charge, before you fix a date, and the call-back is the time to raise it.
Moving from Bupa to another insurer without a gap
Most people looking up how to cancel Bupa want a different policy, not none, and for them the order of events matters more than the cancellation clause. Bupa's own rules for people joining it from another insurer show why. For a fully underwritten policy, the guide (page 12) says Bupa "may agree to continue with your underwriting terms from your previous policy", adding: "We need to agree to this, and there must be no break in your cover." For a moratorium policy switched with no break, "Your moratorium start date continues from your previous policy", though Bupa "may need to review your medical history".
Those are Bupa's terms for people arriving, not another insurer's terms for people leaving Bupa; each insurer sets its own. They do show where the risk sits. In Bupa's wording, carrying terms across is something the insurer agrees to, and it depends on there being no break. The careful order is to have the new cover confirmed in writing with a start date, then give Bupa an end date that matches it. Cancel first and you may be applying as a new customer, with your recent medical history in front of the underwriter.
How insurers treat conditions you already have is on the pre-existing conditions page, and moving provider in general is on the page on switching provider. Other insurers' cancellation wording is set out in how to cancel private health insurance and cancelling a Vitality policy.
What to ask the broker before you end Bupa cover
Keep your membership certificate to hand on the call, since it shows your cover start date and the dates drive most of the answers.
- Would the insurers you can quote carry over my current underwriting terms, or look at my medical history afresh?
- What start date could a new policy have, so that my Bupa end date leaves no gap?
- If I am the main member and I leave, can my partner or children be priced on a policy of their own?
- Bupa has changed my terms at renewal: what would comparable cover elsewhere cost while I am still inside the 28 days?
- I have treatment booked or under way: how could moving now affect it?
Bupa cancellation: short answers
Can someone else cancel my Bupa policy, or take a dependant off it?
Not on their own authority. Page 43 lets a person you have authorised change the cover "as if they were the main member", then adds: "However only the main member can end the cover or add or remove dependants." Removing a dependant is the main member's call.
When can Bupa cancel my cover?
Page 41 lists unpaid premiums, you or a dependant ceasing to live in the UK, an address Bupa cannot confirm after reasonable efforts (it then cancels at renewal), and death. Page 42 adds a relationship that has broken down in Bupa's reasonable opinion, with examples such as being abusive to staff or healthcare providers.
Is this the place to cancel Bupa OSHC or OVHC?
No. Those are Australian student and visitor cover, bought in Australia, and this page deals with UK Bupa By You health insurance. Other Bupa searches that are not about a UK policy are sorted on the Bupa quote page.
Before you settle on an end date, put your current policy details in the form; a broker will call back, free, to talk through what replacing the cover would involve.
