A Bupa renewal puts one decision in front of you: accept the terms for the coming policy year, change them, or take the policy elsewhere. It helps to know before the notice arrives what Bupa's own documents commit it to, and which questions only Bupa can answer. Setting a Bupa renewal beside what other insurers would charge for matching cover is work a broker does in one conversation. The form on this page, completed with your current cover, reaches one who is FCA-authorised; nothing is charged for that, and it takes minutes. Asking Bupa directly is the other route.

What Bupa's documents say about the renewal timetable

Two Bupa documents fix the timetable for a Bupa By You renewal. Bupa's no-claims leaflet for the product (BINS 23776, September 2026), page 2, read 21 October 2026, puts the pricing "around six weeks before your policy is due to renew", so the figure in your letter was settled well before it arrived. The policy guide (BINS 14718, 2024), page 43, read 4 September 2026, lets Bupa alter "these terms, the premiums, any discount or preferential rates and the cover available to you" at the renewal date, and promises a letter "at least 28 days before the renewal date" when it does. That gives you four weeks or more between the letter and the date to have the offer checked, compared or changed, and it means the letter may change the cover as well as the price.

The same guide also deals with the excess at the turn of a policy year. In its worked example a member pays one excess and then, in the guide's words:

"If Helen needs other treatment during the policy year, she doesn't need to pay another excess."

— Bupa, Bupa By You policy guide (BINS 14718, 2024), page 10, read 4 September 2026. The guide is a PDF on Bupa's own site and carries only a 2024 copyright year.

The sentence ties the excess to the policy year, and page 9 of the guide settles what the new year does to it: the excess "renews at the beginning of each policy year even if you're mid way through treatment". Physiotherapy or any other course that begins before your renewal date and carries on after it could therefore cost two excesses, which is worth weighing before you raise the excess on the renewal offer. Bupa health insurance: excess reads the whole example, and the renewal period page shows how another insurer words the same situation.

Underwriting is the other thing that matters at a policy year's end: whether your underwriting terms and any special conditions carry on unchanged when you renew is worth having confirmed, and question six below puts it to Bupa. It matters most if you move, because a new insurer can underwrite you again from the start. The renewal price page quotes the pre-existing condition wording, Bupa's among it, and explains why.

Your Bupa renewal date, notice and price: what to check

The searches that bring people here are practical ones. Some are settled by your own paperwork, and the rest are for Bupa.

  • The renewal date. It is the end of your current policy year, and the place to look for it is your own membership certificate or schedule. The date is the one thing here you can look up for yourself today.
  • The renewal notice, and whether it arrives by post, email or online account. The guide's minimum is 28 days' notice of any change; whether the letter comes by post, by email or to an online account is a question for Bupa. Check which email address and postal address Bupa holds for you, because a notice sent to an old one is easy to miss.
  • Renewing online. Whether Bupa lets you accept or change terms in an online account, and what you can alter that way, is for Bupa to confirm. The page on renewing online covers what to check in general.
  • The 2026 price increase. A general percentage would tell you little about your own notice. Market-wide, a renewal figure tends to move with your age, your claims and any change to the policy; why premiums go up goes through them, and what goes into Bupa prices covers the rest. Your notice carries the only increase that is yours, and why a Bupa renewal price goes up takes Bupa's own explanation of the rise step by step.
  • What Bupa may change at renewal. Limits, the hospital list and options are the things to look for. The page-43 clause quoted above reaches the cover as well as the premium, so ask Bupa to list every change in one place rather than only the new figure.

Reading the notice when it comes

Whatever form the notice takes, three things in it matter more than the headline price. The first is whether the premium is the only change. A higher figure sitting on top of a lower limit or a shorter hospital list is two changes, and you should weigh both. The second is the excess and out-patient limit now shown against your name, because those are the settings that decide what a claim costs you. The third is the date by which you must act if you want something different. Keep last year's notice or certificate to hand so the two can be read side by side.

Questions to put to Bupa before you accept

  1. What is my renewal date, and when will the notice for the next year reach me, and by what route?
  2. What did I pay last year, what is the figure now, and has the cover itself changed?
  3. If treatment is running across my renewal date, which excess level applies to the part after it: the one I hold now, or one I choose at renewal?
  4. What would the premium be at a higher excess, or with a lower out-patient limit, and what would the lower limit take away?
  5. If I do nothing, does the policy renew by itself, and by when must I say if I am leaving?
  6. Do my underwriting terms carry on unchanged if I renew?

Ask for each answer in writing, because a conversation on the phone is hard to point to later, and keep the replies with the notice.

Getting a Bupa renewal compared: what to have ready

A comparison is only as good as the details behind it, and most of them are on paperwork Bupa has already sent you. Gather these before you fill in the form, so the broker can match like with like:

  • The renewal notice itself, with the new premium and any change it lists to cover, limits or options.
  • Your current excess and out-patient limit, since a quote elsewhere at a different setting is not a like-for-like figure.
  • The hospital list or option you hold, because a cheaper quote with fewer hospitals is a smaller policy, not a cheaper version of the same one.
  • How you were underwritten, and any condition excluded or special term shown on your certificate, which a new insurer may treat differently.
  • Claims you have made, and any treatment under way or planned, including a course that will run across the renewal date.
  • Everyone on the policy, with each person's date of birth.

With those in hand, the four weeks or more between the letter and the renewal date leaves room to see Bupa's figure set against matching cover elsewhere before anything is decided.

Keep, change or switch: where each choice is covered

Each choice has a page that does it in full, so this one only points the way.

  • Keep it. Renew as offered. Compare the new figure with last year's and with the questions above first; your renewal price: what to do is the page for that.
  • Change the settings. Raising the excess or trimming the out-patient limit tends to lower a premium, and both usually cost you something at the point of a claim. How benefit limits work is on that page, and how an excess works across insurers is on the excess explainer. How much either saves on a Bupa policy depends on your details, and a broker can price both settings for you, free, on the call-back.
  • Switch. Settle the underwriting question before anything else. Switching private health insurance provider covers carrying your terms across and the timing; do not let the Bupa policy end before the new one is confirmed in writing.

Bupa renewal questions

Is Bupa's price going up in 2026?

On Bupa By You, the no-claims leaflet puts the pricing around six weeks before the renewal date, so your notice is where your own figure appears. It shows what applies to you, and a broker can put one set of details to several insurers at once to show what they would charge for matching cover.

When is my Bupa renewal date?

It is the end date of your current policy year, which your membership certificate or schedule is the place to check. If you cannot find it, ask Bupa to confirm it in writing.

How will Bupa send my renewal notice?

The Bupa By You guide sets a floor of 28 days' written notice ahead of the renewal date for any change. Ask Bupa whether that letter goes by post, by email or to an online account, and make sure the contact details it holds are current.

Can I renew my Bupa policy online?

Ask Bupa what its online account lets you do at renewal, and ask before the date. Anything you change that way, have confirmed in writing.

Does the Bupa excess start again at renewal?

On Bupa By You, yes. Page 9 of the policy guide has the excess renewing at the start of each policy year even part-way through treatment, so one course that crosses the date could attract it twice. On any other Bupa product, ask Bupa whether the same rule applies.

When the notice and the answers are in front of you, send the form and a broker will call to set Bupa's renewal figure against the nearest matching cover from other insurers. Do it before the date, while every option is still open.
