Aviva private medical reviews are easy to find and hard to use. A star rating blends people who bought different Aviva policies on different options, many of whom will never have claimed. This page carries no score and summarises no customer feedback; it reads the policy wording those reviews are about. What you are deciding is narrower than a reputation: whether the Aviva policy you would actually be sold pays for what you are buying it for, and how it stands against the alternatives. If you want Aviva priced on your own details beside other insurers' prices, an FCA-authorised broker can set that up, and this page's enquiry form is how to be introduced.

On Aviva itself we have no verdict either way.

What Aviva healthcare insurance reviews are good for, and where they stop

A review describing dealings with Aviva (how fast the phone was answered, whether pre-authorisation for a scan came through, how long a hospital waited to be paid) is evidence about service, and service is the part that carries over from one policyholder to the next. A review describing what Aviva would or would not pay for is evidence about one person's contract, which may carry a higher excess than yours, a lower out-patient limit, a different hospital option, an older issue of the terms, or choices an employer made. A one-star story about a refused claim is sometimes a clause doing exactly what it says, so the useful question is whether your own quote carries that clause.

For the service side, review platforms such as Trustpilot show whoever chose to post, while the Financial Ombudsman Service publishes complaints data about named firms. Both are worth checking for Aviva yourself; this page quotes no figure from either. The general method is on how to read health insurance reviews; this page applies its cover side to Aviva's wording.

Which edition of Aviva's terms to check against

Every line below attributed to Aviva comes from Aviva Health UK Limited's Healthier Solutions terms and conditions, the edition dated March 2026 and coded AV1590050_GEN6842_0326, taken from Aviva's website on 21 October 2026; page numbers are PDF pages. That edition is for cover begun or renewed before 1 November 2026, and Aviva may write later cover on a replacement: compare each line below with the documents that arrive with your quote, and a broker can point out anything that has changed, free, on the call-back. Where a question goes unanswered here, Aviva's full terms may well deal with it, so ask.

Four complaints, and the Aviva wording that would decide them

Complaints of these four kinds reach every private medical insurer; none below is quoted from a review, and none is a claim about how often Aviva in particular hears it.

A claim refused over a condition you had before

"We do not cover treatment of any pre-existing condition, or any related or associated condition unless you advised us of that condition in writing when you applied for the policy and either we did not apply an exclusion for it, or it is not excluded under the policy"

— Aviva, Healthier Solutions terms and conditions (March 2026 issue), page 27, read 21 October 2026.

"Related or associated" reaches past the condition itself, and the clause defines neither word, so whether a new problem is linked to an old one is Aviva's judgement. The way back into cover runs through what you told Aviva in writing when you applied, so a claim can turn on a form completed years before. The sentence says nothing about a moratorium, and neither does this page; a page on Aviva's underwriting is planned for that, and the routes insurers use generally are on buying cover with an existing condition.

A separate exclusion catches what is long-running: the same terms exclude chronic conditions, defined partly by a need for ongoing or long-term monitoring (page 3). The definition runs on to further characteristics, so read it whole in your own documents; the basics of UK private cover quotes its opening.

An excess charged twice

The March 2026 terms offer six excess amounts between £100 and £5,000, payable "for each member every policy year" (page 11), and the worked example adds that where treatment runs on into a following policy year, "another excess will apply" (page 12). Treatment that runs across a renewal date can therefore meet two excesses. Anyone caught this way is charged as the wording says; whether the sale made that clear is the fairer complaint. How an excess works quotes the clause, and the renewal period explained carries the carry-over example.

A consultation or scan not paid for

Here the out-patient option decides. Where a policyholder chose reduced out-patient cover with a £0 limit, the terms say "we do not cover treatment as an out-patient, including consultations and diagnostic tests" (page 24), which is usually where a referral starts. Treatment through "some of our networks" sits outside that limit (page 8), and that passage does not name them. Picking a £500 or £1,000 out-patient limit has a further effect: pregnancy or childbirth complications and dental surgery in hospital are then not covered at all, admitted or not (page 8), as benefit limits explained sets out. A lower out-patient limit generally brings the premium down; this is what that trade gives up.

A hospital that turns out not to be covered

Aviva's cancer terms pay for chemotherapy in full where you have it "at a hospital covered under your hospital option" (page 18), and say the same of radiotherapy (page 20), so where you are treated can bear on what is paid. Which hospitals that takes in depends on the list attached to your option, so check by name the hospitals you would want; the method is on hospital lists explained.

All four turn on a setting or a definition you can see before paying anything. Have a broker price Aviva on the excess, out-patient option and hospital option you would really pick, beside other insurers set up the same way. Asking is free; send the request from the form on this page.

Turning Aviva's reviews into a decision about your own policy

No single answer fits everyone, but reviews become useful once each is sorted by what it is really about and checked against your quote.

If the review is aboutWhat it says about your Aviva policyCheck before you buy
Phone waits, slow authorisation, late paymentService, which carries over; several recent accounts of one problem outweigh a single angry oneHow a claim is authorised, and how long that takes
A claim refused over an earlier conditionDepends on what that reviewer declaredYour own history against the page 27 clause
Paying the excess againThe excess runs per member, per policy yearYour excess and your renewal date
A consultation or scan not paidPossibly an out-patient option the reviewer choseWhich out-patient option your price assumes
A hospital not coveredThe reviewer's hospital optionYour hospitals, by name

Each item in the last column concerns your quote, not Aviva's standing, and each can be settled in writing before a premium is paid.

What to put to a broker about an Aviva policy

Ask them of Aviva and of any rival at the same time, so the answers line up; a broker can do that in one conversation.

  1. Which edition of Aviva's terms is the quote priced on? If it is an issue later than March 2026, has the pre-existing conditions, excess or out-patient wording changed?
  2. How would my medical history be treated? Name the condition, and ask what Aviva would count as "related or associated" to it.
  3. What is my excess, and when does my policy year end?
  4. Which out-patient option is priced in, and would it pay for a first consultation and a scan? If it is the £0 limit, which networks fall outside it?
  5. Which hospital option is this, and are the hospitals near me on it?
  6. How is a claim authorised, and who do I contact?

Aviva health insurance reviews: further questions

Is Aviva health insurance any good?

That depends on the policy, and we score no insurer. The better test is whether the policy you are offered covers what you want it for: your history against the pre-existing conditions clause, the out-patient option against how referrals begin, the hospital option against where you would go.

What is Aviva's Trustpilot rating?

None appears here, because this page does not repeat other sites' scores. If you check it yourself, note how many reviews it rests on, how recent they are, and whether it mixes health cover with Aviva's other insurance.

Is Bupa or Aviva health insurance better? What about AXA or Vitality?

We publish no ranking, because a ranking is a recommendation. The comparison that means something is the same specification priced at each, which which insurer to choose explains. Reviews pages for AXA Health, Vitality and WPA are written; one for Bupa is planned.

What does Aviva health insurance cover?

The full list sits in Aviva's benefit table and turns on the options chosen, so ask for it with your quote; what an Aviva policy includes goes through it line by line. On treatment abroad the terms are blunt: "We do not pay for treatment outside the UK" (page 24).

Do reviews of Aviva cover through work apply to a policy I buy myself?

Only on service, since a company scheme's settings (excess, out-patient limit, hospitals) were chosen by the employer. Cover an employer pays for is usually a taxable benefit in kind, a general point rather than tax advice; the tax page covers it properly.

Can I buy Aviva health insurance in Jersey, Guernsey or the Isle of Man?

On the islands, the March 2026 terms say: "The six week option is not available to residents of the Channel Islands or the Isle of Man" (page 11). Whether the rest of the policy is sold there is a question for Aviva or a broker. The option itself is explained on getting an Aviva quote.

Does Aviva cover menopause, endometriosis, sleep apnoea or an autism assessment?

Whether any of them is covered depends on your history and the policy, so ask whether the condition would count as pre-existing for you, and whether Aviva would treat its care as chronic under the page 3 definition. For autism and ADHD assessments specifically, see Aviva, autism and additional needs.

The single next step is the Aviva quote itself, on the options you would really choose, read against the wording above before any star rating. If you want it set beside others built to the same specification, the form on this page takes the request, and the comparison comes back from the broker.
