Bupa and Vitality are the two names people most often weigh against each other when they shop for private medical insurance, and no published document settles the choice. A policy is a set of settings: how your medical history is underwritten, which hospitals are on the list, how much out-patient cover you have, what excess you carry, and which benefits are core rather than add-ons. The two insurers' products differ setting by setting and person by person, so the question only has an answer once both are quoted on the same terms for you. An FCA-authorised broker can tell you which of the two it is able to quote, and price the cover on the settings you choose, and that starts with the form on this page; there is no charge, and it asks for very little.
Whether you came to compare Bupa plans with Vitality's or to weigh up Bupa vs AXA, the method below is the same.
Why this page does not set Bupa's cover against Vitality's
No Vitality document has been read for this site, so there is nothing of Vitality's here to quote or paraphrase. One Bupa document has been read — the Bupa By You policy guide, reference BINS 14718, carrying a 2024 copyright line, read on Bupa's own website on 4 September 2026 — and its clauses are quoted, with page numbers, on what a Bupa premium buys, what Bupa excludes and Bupa dental cover. They are not repeated here, because a Bupa clause with nothing from Vitality beside it is not a comparison: it invites you to read a gap in this site's reading as a difference between two insurers.
Quote Bupa on the excess and go quiet on Vitality, and you would conclude either that Vitality has no excess or that it works differently, and both would be invented. So where this page is silent about either insurer, the silence is this site's: nothing here should be read as saying that either insurer lacks a feature. When Vitality's wording has been read, the pages on what Vitality includes, what moves a Vitality price and Vitality's underwriting will carry it.
What a Bupa versus Vitality comparison turns on
Seven things, taken in the order worth taking them. The price comes last, because it follows from the rest rather than explaining them.
Underwriting: what each insurer would exclude for you
The biggest difference between two quotes is usually not in the brochure but in what each insurer does with your medical history. Under a moratorium there is no questionnaire, and conditions from a period before you joined stay excluded until you have gone a stretch without them; under full medical underwriting you declare your history and are told the exclusions up front. Which routes each insurer offers, and the years each counts, are in wording not held here, so this is the first thing to have quoted. How pre-existing conditions are handled explains the routes.
The hospital list
Each insurer pays at hospitals on the list you chose, lists come in tiers, and guided options, where the insurer picks the hospital and specialist, are usually priced below a wide list. The comparison that matters is local: which of the two has the hospital you would actually go to, on the tier you can afford. Hospital lists explained covers tiers; Bupa's hospital lists is the Bupa page.
Out-patient cover
Consultations, tests and scans before any admission. Whether a policy pays for them in full, up to a yearly limit, or not at all is the setting that most changes both the premium and what you pay yourself in an ordinary year. Two quotes with different out-patient settings are not comparable. Out-patient cover explains the choices.
The excess
The amount you pay towards eligible treatment before the insurer does. Three things vary between wordings: the levels offered, whether it is charged once a policy year or once a claim, and on a joint policy whether each person carries one. Set the same excess on both quotes, then ask how each counts it. What an excess is and Bupa's excess go further.
Core cover and add-ons
Mental health, dental, optical, therapies and fuller out-patient cover sit inside the core policy on some wordings and are options on others, and the certificate rather than the brochure says which you have. When one quote looks cheaper, check whether something the other includes has been left out. The Bupa By You clauses on this are on what a Bupa premium buys; nothing is held for Vitality.
What sits outside the policy
Discounts, rewards, apps and health checks are marketed alongside policies across the market, and they are not cover. If one is part of your reason for choosing, ask what it depends on, whether it is priced into the premium and whether it survives renewal, and keep it out of the policy comparison. Bupa's discounts and offers and Vitality's discounts and offers each have a page to themselves.
The price
Nothing on this site says what either insurer charges: no premium data is held, and any figure here would be a guess dressed as a fact. What moves the number is your age, your postcode, who is on the policy and every setting above, so two quotes only compare when all of those are held the same.
Nine questions to ask about both Bupa and Vitality
Ask these of both insurers in the same words and have the answers written side by side, so you are weighing answers rather than impressions.
- On what underwriting basis would each insurer take me, and what would each exclude for my history? If a moratorium, how many years back does it look, and how long before an excluded condition comes back into cover?
- Which hospital list is each quote on, is the hospital I would use on it at that tier, and what does the tier above or below do to the premium?
- What out-patient cover is each quote on: full, a yearly limit, or none? If a limit, what does it cover and what happens once it is spent?
- What excess is each quote carrying, is it charged once a policy year or once a claim, and on a joint policy is it once per person?
- Which of mental health, dental, optical and therapies is core on each quote, which is an add-on, and what does each add-on do to the price?
- Is there an option on either policy that sends me to the NHS when its waiting time is short, and what does it do to the premium?
- Is there a cash payment if I use the NHS for something the policy would have paid for privately?
- Which document governs the policy I am being quoted, by its reference number, and can I have the full guide before I decide?
- What moves the premium at renewal, and does a claim during the year change it?
The answers, not the names, are the comparison. A broker who holds agencies with both insurers can put the whole list to each and bring the two sets of answers back together, and the form on this page will introduce you to an FCA-authorised one; going to each insurer direct is open to you too, and nothing is charged for the introduction.
Questions people ask when they compare Bupa with Vitality
Which is better, Bupa or Vitality?
"Better" is not a property of either brand. It means which insurer excludes less of your history, which lists the hospital you would use, and which costs less once every setting is the same — facts about two quotes, and nothing published settles them in advance. This site gives no advice and makes no recommendation; it introduces readers to a broker.
Is AXA Health, Aviva or WPA better than Bupa?
The framework above does not change with the second name. These are the Bupa alternatives people weigh up alongside Vitality, and all that changes is whose wording the hospital list, the excess and the add-ons are read from, so the nine questions are still the ones to ask. UK providers compared sets insurers side by side.
What does Bupa cover?
The Bupa By You clauses this site has read are set out on what a Bupa premium buys and what Bupa excludes, and what Bupa includes is the page built for the question. They are not summarised here, because a page that quotes one insurer and not the other is not a comparison.
What are Bupa Select, Bupa Well+ and the Bupa Smile Plan?
If one of those names is on your quote, ask for its own document by reference number and read that rather than the By You guide. No document describing any of them has been read for this site, so nothing can be said here about what any of them covers; Bupa dental cover takes the Select question as far as this site can.
Is Bupa health insurance good?
What can be judged is wording, and the Bupa wording held here is on what a Bupa premium buys; whether Bupa is worth it and Bupa reviews are the sibling pages. Whether Bupa is the best health insurance in the UK is the same question with a bigger word in it, and this site makes no judgement of that kind.
Are Bupa vs Vitality reviews worth reading?
Read them for how claims were handled rather than for which policy to buy: a review tells you how one person's claim went on a policy whose settings you cannot see. Bupa reviews and Vitality's reviews and reputation are the pages for each, and no review data is held here.
Can I compare Bupa and Vitality on a comparison website?
Which insurers appear on which comparison site is not something this site tracks, and this site is not one of them: it is not FCA-authorised, does not give quotes, and introduces readers to a single FCA-authorised broker, for which it may be paid.
How do I find the best Bupa dermatologist or consultant?
Under a private medical policy the question is not who is best but who is recognised: whether a consultant, at a hospital, is one the insurer will pay for under your hospital list, which the insurer or your broker can confirm before you are referred. No consultant data is held here and this site does not rate doctors.
The single next step is to get the two priced on the same settings. Give the form on this page your details, put the nine questions to the FCA-authorised broker you are put in touch with, and ask which of the two insurers it is able to quote, so that what you choose between is policies rather than names.
