Bupa sells two quite different things under one name: health insurance for people who live in the UK, and international health insurance that is meant to go with you from country to country. Which one fits turns on where you will live and where you expect to be treated. Weighing UK cover against cover that travels? Through the form on this page, have an FCA-authorised broker ring back without charge to talk over UK health insurance and international cover in general; ask during that call whether it can quote Bupa Global itself.
Where you live decides which Bupa you are dealing with
Bupa's UK policy guide for Bupa By You, its health insurance for people living in the UK, sets a residence condition for eligibility. To be eligible, you and your dependants must "be resident in the UK throughout the duration of your cover". The guide also lets Bupa cancel when someone moves away from the UK, since it may then be unable to provide or service the cover, claims included. A UK policy, then, is built for someone who lives here and stays here (Bupa's guide BINS 14718, headed as the Bupa By You guide for policies starting after 1 May 2024, read on Bupa's site on 29 October 2026; check the guide sent with your quote).
Bupa Global is built the other way round. Its United Kingdom page (read 29 October 2026) says its health plan "travels with you, providing the same level of cover whether you’re at home or abroad". The same page offers plans to residents of the United Kingdom, so living in Britain does not rule Bupa Global out; it is simply designed for someone who wants cover outside the UK as well as in it.
The two sit in the same group. Bupa's 2020 results statement reports them together as one market unit, "Bupa Global and UK", and a May 2026 item on Bupa Global's intermediary newsroom describes Bupa "bringing together its UK Insurance and UK-based Bupa Global (IPMI) commercial teams". Being under one roof does not make the policies interchangeable: they have separate terms, plans and prices.
What happens when you are treated abroad
This is the clearest practical split. The Bupa By You guide lists overseas treatment among the things it does not pay for: "Treatment you have outside of the UK isn’t covered." It then carves out a narrow exception for a condition whose eligible treatment is not available in the UK, where the policy pays the cost of the standard alternative that is routinely available in the UK, and the reader pays any difference. In other words, a UK policy is about treatment in the UK, with the overseas exception tied to a UK benchmark.
Bupa Global pages describe cover that follows you. You pick an area of cover, and its plan comparison for UK residents says the options are "worldwide with or without U.S. or Europe (including UK)". The words in brackets matter to a UK reader: leaving Europe out of the area is a choice the page lists, and Europe there includes the UK. If you are tempted by a narrower area to save money, ask Bupa Global before you buy what it would mean for treatment at home.
If what you really need is a plan for short trips rather than a life in two countries, that is a travel question, covered in international cover while travelling. For a UK citizen moving overseas for good, international health insurance for UK citizens is the better starting point.
How each range of plans is put together
Bupa By You is one policy guide with three cover levels inside it: Comprehensive, Treatment and Care, and Prompt Diagnosis. The guide says it contains all the possible cover options and that your membership certificate shows the cover you selected, so you may not have everything the guide sets out. The choices you make sit on top of that: what is included, your excess, and so on, covered on Bupa excess and what Bupa covers.
Bupa Global works the other way round: you pick one of its named plans, and each carries its own annual limit, which Bupa Global defines as the maximum it will pay in total for all benefits for each person in each policy year, and its own choice of areas. The page also warns that "all of our health plans carry some waiting periods, limitations and exclusions", so the plan card is a summary and not the contract. How the tiers differ from each other is the subject of Bupa Global Elite and the other Bupa Global plans, and how dental treatment fits is on whether Bupa Global covers dental. For the quote tool, area choices and tier table, see Bupa international cover.
How you buy each one
Bupa UK cover can be bought from Bupa directly or through a broker; getting a Bupa quote sets out both routes. Bupa Global can be bought direct as well. Its UK page offers an estimated quote online, a "Buy online" button and a phone number for help choosing. Bupa Global also works with intermediaries: its newsroom for them says "Our intermediary partners play an important role in our business", and it offers them product literature, pricing and an online portal for quotes.
Bupa Global’s intermediaries are its own partners, so do not assume the broker you reach from here can quote Bupa Global. Which insurers it arranges international policies with, and what it can do on a UK policy, are fair first questions for the call.
Price: why there is no honest side-by-side figure
A comparison of what the two cost would need the same person, the same cover and the same country, and the two are priced on different things. A UK policy is priced on UK factors, set out in what goes into a Bupa price. International cover is priced on where you live, the area you choose and the limits and deductible you pick, so one person's figure says little about another's; what international health insurance costs explains the wider picture. Ask Bupa UK and Bupa Global each for a quote on your own details. Renewal is a separate matter, and why a Bupa premium rises deals with the UK side.
A short test before you ask for a quote
- Where will you live for the next few years? A fixed home in the UK points to the UK product; a move or a split life points to international cover.
- Where do you expect to be treated? If it is always in the UK, a UK policy fits the use. If it could be anywhere, the Bupa By You overseas exclusion is the sentence to read first.
- Do you need a named plan with an annual limit, or a build-your-own policy? The two are structured differently, as above.
- Who will arrange it? Direct with Bupa, or through an intermediary.
If your answers point both ways, bring them to the call; the form itself only takes your name, age band, phone, email and postcode.
Moving, switching and the group behind both
Can I keep my Bupa UK policy if I move abroad?
Not automatically. Bupa By You is for people living in the UK, and Bupa may cancel when a member stops living here, so tell Bupa before you leave and get its answer on your policy in writing.
Is Bupa Global just Bupa UK with a bigger map?
No. They are separate products with their own policy documents, plan names and limits, even though the group reports them together. Compare the documents for each, not the brand.
Can I move from Bupa UK cover to Bupa Global, or back?
Treat it as buying a new policy rather than changing the old one: they are separate products with their own terms. Before you cancel anything, ask the insurer you are moving to, in writing, how it would treat conditions you already have and any waiting periods, and keep the old cover until the new one is confirmed.
