Dental cover on Bupa Global depends on which plan you pick: the two lower tiers, Major Medical and Select, do not pay for routine dental work, while Premier, Elite and Ultimate do, after a waiting period and within a yearly limit. Torn between a Bupa Global plan and UK cover that includes dental? An FCA-authorised broker will phone to go over that comparison with you, without charge, as soon as your name and number arrive through the form on this page.
The Bupa Global benefit details below come from its plan brochure dated April 2026 (BIN-BGHP-SALE-EN-XXXX-2606-0065255) and its plan pages, read on 29 October 2026. The brochure calls itself "a summary comparison" and says "Full details of the benefits, limitations and exclusions for each global health plan can be found in the relevant membership guide", so the guide you are sent is the document that binds.
Which Bupa Global plans pay for dental work
Bupa Global describes its middle tier like this: "Premier covers in- and out-patient plus increased wellbeing benefits with dental treatment, hearing aids and optical". The brochure's benefit table then shows the pattern plan by plan.
| Dental benefit | Major Medical | Select | Premier | Elite | Ultimate |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Accident-related dental treatment as an in-patient or day-patient | Paid in full | Paid in full | Paid in full | Paid in full | Paid in full |
| Preventive dental and dental checks (6 months waiting period) | Not covered | Not covered | Paid in full, 2 visits each policy year | Paid in full, 2 visits each policy year | Paid in full |
| Routine dental and major restorative work (6 months waiting period) | Not covered | Not covered | Yes, within a yearly limit | Yes, within a yearly limit | Yes, within a yearly limit |
| Orthodontics (12 months waiting period) | Not covered | Not covered | Not covered | Yes, within a yearly limit | Yes, within a yearly limit |
Routine dental in the table means fillings, root treatment, x-rays, tooth extraction and anaesthesia; major restorative means bridges, crowns, dental implants and dentures. The plan page puts it in one sentence: "We pay for accident-related dental treatment, and after 6 months, we cover routine treatments like fillings, root canal treatments and tooth extraction." It adds that "Limitations apply to Premier and Elite plans".
How much each plan will pay in a year
The brochure prints one yearly figure per plan for this block of benefits, and per person, in the currency your premium is paid in. For Premier it is GBP 1,000 (EUR 1,250 / USD 1,700) each policy year, shown against out-patient accident-related dental treatment during the waiting period and carried across the routine dental, major restorative, hearing aid and spectacle-and-contact-lens rows beside it. Elite shows GBP 2,500 (EUR 3,100 / USD 4,200) each policy year in one cell running from orthodontics down to spectacle and contact lenses. Ultimate shows GBP 10,000 (EUR 12,500 / USD 17,000) each policy year in one cell running from orthodontics down to refractive eye surgery.
Because each plan's figure is printed once across that group of rows, it reads as one yearly limit for the group, but how it is split between, say, a crown and a pair of glasses is a question for the membership guide, not the brochure. If you expect major dental work, ask Bupa Global for the exact limit and its wording before choosing a tier. Not sure whether a yearly limit of that size would stretch to the work you expect? The broker who rings once the form is in can compare dental limits on UK and international cover with you at no charge.
Waiting periods and the first six months
There is "No general waiting period" on any Bupa Global health plan, but the same line warns that "waiting periods could apply to specific benefits", and dental is one of them: 6 months for preventive dental, routine dental and major restorative work, and 12 months for orthodontics. That matters if you are hoping to start a plan and book a filling the next week.
Accidents are treated differently. Accident-related dental treatment as an in-patient or day-patient is paid in full on every plan, and on Premier, Elite and Ultimate the brochure also lists out-patient accident-related dental treatment during the dental waiting period, for up to 30 days after the accident, within the plan's yearly figure. A lost front tooth in month two is therefore a different question from a crown you were already expecting to need.
The brochure's list of exclusions applying across all global health plans names "Pre-existing conditions, unless you have applied for cover that includes a medical loading to cover these conditions", and "Cosmetic treatment". If you already know about a tooth that needs work, or want something done for looks, put both lines to Bupa Global in writing before relying on the plan.
Eye tests, glasses, contact lenses and hearing aids
The same block of the table covers optical. Premier and Elite include one eye test each policy year, and Ultimate pays eye tests in full; Major Medical and Select do not cover them. Bupa Global's plan page says "We also cover prescribed hearing aids, spectacle frames and lenses and contact lenses", and the brochure shows these on the Premier, Elite and Ultimate columns within the yearly figures above.
Laser and other eyesight surgery is a separate matter. The brochure shows refractive eye surgery as "Not covered" on Major Medical, Select, Premier and Elite, and lists "Treatment equipment or surgery to correct eyesight" among the additional exclusions for each of those four plans. Ultimate is different: its GBP 10,000 yearly figure runs down to include the refractive eye surgery row, and eyesight correction is not among Ultimate's additional exclusions, so ask Bupa Global how that applies before relying on it.
If dental is the main thing you want
A plan with dental benefits inside it is a very different thing from a stand-alone dental plan. Bupa Global's dental benefits are one part of an international medical policy, and the price belongs to the whole policy. Bupa Global quotes explains what moves that price.
For someone living in the UK whose priority is dental, the more usual comparison is with Bupa's UK plans, which are a different product from Bupa Global; Bupa Global vs Bupa UK sets out how the two differ and Bupa dental cover covers the UK dental levels and what private dental treatment costs. For the higher tiers, see the Bupa Global Elite page; for how dental works across insurers generally, see private health insurance: dental cover.
For a sense of what dental surgery costs without any cover in the UK, Spire Healthcare hospitals' own pages list wisdom teeth removal at a self-pay price of between £2,322 and £3,396 across 23 UK hospitals, with a median of £2,894 (prices captured 4 September 2026). These are UK self-pay prices at one hospital group, not a Bupa Global benefit and not what any insurance policy would pay or charge.
Ask the broker when they ring which international insurers they work with. Sending the form here starts that conversation, and it lets you weigh a UK dental route against an international one before you commit to either.
