"International student" points two ways on a search page: someone arriving in the UK to study, and a UK student heading somewhere else for a year or a degree. They need different answers, and the second is the one where a UK policy most easily lets you down. What you are deciding is whether to buy anything beyond the health access your route already provides, and if so which product. An FCA-authorised broker can look at your dates, age and destination across several insurers, and you can be put in touch with one, free, through the enquiry form here.

Arriving, or leaving: which of the two are you?

  • Coming to study in the UK. Your starting point is what your visa route gives you, which is the next section. A UK private medical policy would sit on top of that rather than replace it.
  • A UK student going abroad, on exchange or for a full degree. Your UK policy, if you have one, was written for treatment in this country. The section on studying abroad reads what three insurers' wording says.

If you are heading for Quebec, Ontario, Liberty University or KSU, what cover applies there is for the university's international office to say, so ask it whether it runs or requires a plan of its own. Some of the vocabulary belongs elsewhere too. Broadly, a "waiver", OPT and iShip are American usages and OSHC is an Australian arrangement for overseas students there; none is a UK product, so this page leaves them aside.

Coming to study in the UK: what you have before any policy

In general terms, a student visa application normally includes paying the Immigration Health Surcharge, and paying it is what puts a student on a footing to use the NHS during their stay. That is not immigration advice. Whether your route has the surcharge, what it comes to, how long it covers, and what treatment still carries a charge are the Home Office's to set and change, so read GOV.UK for your own visa, including the current amount, before relying on anything here.

The practical effect is that "do international students need health insurance?" has a different answer from "does the visa ask for a private policy?", and neither is settled by an insurer. If your university or your sponsor states a condition about health cover, the wording of that condition decides which product meets it. Private health insurance for a UK visa goes through the line between the surcharge and an insurance contract, and private health insurance for non-UK nationals takes the wider group.

When a UK private policy adds something for an international student

Private medical insurance buys speed and choice over planned treatment after a GP referral, instead of waiting on an NHS list. For a student here for one academic year that is a thin case, because cover is sold by the policy year, with premiums falling due month after month, and a condition you had before arriving is dealt with through underwriting, not paid for as a matter of course. The two routes for that are set out in do insurers cover pre-existing conditions? The case for and against is in is private health insurance worth it?.

The question peculiar to a new arrival is whether an insurer will write a policy for someone whose permission to live here has an end date, and the answer differs from insurer to insurer; a broker can put that question to several of them for you, free, once you have sent the form. The points common to any student in the UK, such as which address a quote is priced on, are in private health insurance for students.

A UK student studying abroad: will a UK policy cover you?

Three UK insurers' overseas wording shows the problem. Each quotation below is one clause from one document, not the whole policy.

Aviva. The Healthier Solutions terms and conditions say: "We do not pay for treatment outside the UK." (Aviva Health UK Limited, April 2025 issue, page 24, read 4 September 2026.) A March 2026 issue of that document has been published since, so check the sentence against the version that comes with your quote.

AXA Health. The Personal Health membership handbook says: "We do not cover any costs for treatment if you live outside the UK." (AXA Health, October 2024, page 30, as hosted by an intermediary, read 4 September 2026.) The sentence before it excludes treatment received anywhere outside the UK, Channel Islands or Isle of Man. For a student whose course is a long one, ask what "live" means here: the clause does not say where AXA draws that line.

WPA. Its Complete Health summary lists an option called Overseas Emergency Treatment: "Up to 35 days per trip (maximum of 180 days and £250,000); Up to 70 days per trip (maximum of 180 days and £500,000)". It also says it "Excludes the USA and its dependencies and winter sports resorts". (Western Provident Association, Insurance Product Information Document, Complete Health, November 2025, page 1, read 4 September 2026.) WPA lists this as something you can choose, not as a bar on cover abroad, and it is written for emergencies on a trip, counted in days; whether a term or a year at a foreign university counts as a trip is for WPA to say, so ask before relying on it.

The page on cover while travelling sets the three side by side. On these three wordings, a student should not count on a domestic policy for a course overseas. The usual alternatives are a travel policy for a short stay, a plan the host university runs or requires, or an international plan; cover while travelling and keeping the cost down when you live abroad take those up. A broker can put your destination and course dates to more than one insurer, and say whether keeping a UK policy running alongside makes sense; the enquiry form here reaches one.

Cheap international student health insurance: deciding before you compare

We give no price for student cover, for the reason set out under the cost question below. What we can give is an order that stops a student buying a cheap policy that does not fit the course.

  1. Start from the institution's letter. If the university, a scholarship or a sponsor names a level of cover or a plan of its own, that settles what you are buying. Send its exact words to whoever quotes you.
  2. Fit the policy to the course dates. A course may end partway through a policy year. Ask before buying what happens to the premium if you finish early or leave.
  3. Decide where you would be treated. UK private medical insurance is for planned treatment here; for treatment in the country where you study, the cover has to be written for that country.
  4. Then line the cheap options up together, on excess, limits and territory, since a lower price often means more of any claim stays with you.

Questions to put to whoever quotes you

  • Is this written for someone living in the UK, or for someone living in another country, and does my course length fit?
  • Which countries are excluded, and does that include where I am studying?
  • How is a condition I already have treated, and which underwriting basis is the quote on?
  • Does it pay for dental, and is that a standard benefit or an addition?
  • What happens if I extend my studies or move to another country partway through?
  • If my university asks for proof of cover, will the policy documents satisfy its wording?

Short answers

What is international student health insurance?

Usually a policy for people studying away from their home country, written on the basis that they live elsewhere for a period. It differs from UK private medical insurance, which is built around residents who have the NHS behind them.

Do international students need health insurance in the UK?

That depends on the visa route and the institution, and GOV.UK and your university are where to check. Broadly, where the surcharge applies NHS access comes through it, but a university or sponsor can still set its own condition, so read theirs before deciding nothing more is needed.

How much does international student health insurance cost?

We give no figure. The indicative ranges on our other pages describe UK policies for people with the NHS behind them, and a student plan is priced on destination, course length, age and medical history, none of which those ranges reflect. What international cover costs explains what moves a quote; your own quote is the number to trust.

Does Bupa offer insurance for international students?

Bupa's international cover has its own page, and a broker or Bupa itself can say whether a student option is open to you.

Can I get cover with a medical condition I already have?

Usually the condition itself is excluded or restricted, and how depends on the underwriting basis the policy is written on and on the insurer. The pre-existing conditions page linked above sets out the two routes; answer every health question you are asked fully.

Can my family be on an international student plan?

Some plans take a partner or children and some do not, and each insurer sets its own rule, so ask first; expat health insurance describes the longer-term product.

Will my UK health insurance cover me while I study abroad?

Do not assume it. Two of the three UK wordings above exclude treatment outside the UK, and the third is an optional emergency benefit counted per trip. Read your own wording and ask the insurer in writing.

Before you buy anything for a course, give the broker your dates, destination and age through the form on this page, so the reply can set out options from more than one insurer.
