Two adults and one insurer raise a plain choice: put both of you on a single Bupa policy, or take out two. A broker can price either version for the same two people, at Bupa and at other insurers, in one call; once your details are in this page's enquiry form, an FCA-authorised broker will take it on at no charge to you. This page sticks to what Bupa's own wording says about members, excesses and medical history when there are two of you, and lists what to ask where it leaves a question open. The price of couples' cover in general is a separate question, which private health insurance for couples: what it costs answers across several insurers.
Bupa cover for couples: who is on the policy
Bupa's wording talks about members and a main member. Bupa By You's policy guide (reference BINS 14718, 2024 on its copyright line, downloaded from Bupa's website on 4 September 2026) says "Your membership certificate shows if you have Dental Cover 20" (page 25), and that when a special condition applies Bupa will "send a confirmation of special conditions to the main member" (page 11). Everything below reads those two ideas, the member and the main member, for a household of two.
On that wording a couple is two members, one of whom is the main member. Who may be the main member, whether the other adult has any standing of their own with Bupa, and whether the pair has to be married or live at one address are the opening questions for a Bupa quote for two; the broker's free call-back is the time to put them. Bupa health insurance for families asks the same questions of a whole household, and Bupa health insurance for children asks them for a child; this page keeps to two adults.
Search phrases such as "Bupa couples health insurance" and "Bupa plans for couples" suggest a product with that name. Treat "couples cover" as a way of describing two members on one policy unless a quote names a product.
The excess with two of you: per person or per policy?
Bupa's guide works one example of an excess, and the person in it is alone. A £250 physiotherapy bill is split, £150 from Bupa and £100 from the member, "which is the policy excess", and "if Helen needs other treatment during the policy year, she doesn't need to pay another excess" (Bupa By You policy guide, page 10). Bupa health insurance: excess reads the example phrase by phrase. For a couple it leaves one gap that matters.
The words "the policy excess" can be read in two ways. On the first, the excess belongs to the policy, so one payment would settle it for both of you however many claims follow. On the second, it is a feature of each member's cover, and the example shows only one member's. The example has no second person in it, so it does not settle which applies. The difference matters when you both claim in one year: on the first reading you share one payment, on the second you each make one.
Three situations are worth raising with Bupa, or with the broker who phones after your enquiry, who will explain each without charge:
- One of us claims and the other does not. Does only the partner who claims pay an excess?
- Both of us claim in the same policy year. Do we each pay, or does the first payment cover us both?
- We want different excess levels, one low and one high. Can one policy carry both?
A phone or video Direct Access assessment sits outside this. The guide says the member "won't need to pay an excess for it" and that its cost is not taken from the out-patient allowance, "if either of these apply to your policy" (page 7), so for whichever of you uses it, the question does not arise.
Two medical histories on one Bupa policy
The guide says that conditions, "special conditions, pre-existing conditions, moratorium conditions", and symptoms, illnesses or injuries you had before the policy started "aren't usually covered" (page 11). The sentence speaks to "you", so a couple should read it as speaking to each of them. A knee operation in one partner's past is that partner's history. Whether two members go through underwriting separately, whether they can be on different routes, and whether one person's special condition has any effect on the other's cover or price all depend on the policy, so ask before you apply; the broker can talk you through all three when they phone, free.
The main-member wording has a practical side for a pair. The confirmation of special conditions goes to the main member. If the condition is your partner's, the confirmation about their cover is sent to you, or to them, depending on who was made the main member at the start. Decide who the main member is on purpose, and ask Bupa whether a confirmation about one adult is also sent to that adult. Bupa health insurance: underwriting explains the routes themselves, and do insurers cover pre-existing conditions sets this clause beside other wording.
What a couple on one policy might pay: a market range, not Bupa's
Bupa prices a couple on their own ages and settings, and none of the bands below belongs to Bupa. They are indicative monthly bands for the wider UK market, neither a quote nor an offer, for two adults sharing a single mid-range policy:
| Both adults in their | Indicative premium a month, between you |
|---|---|
| Forties | about £80 to £150 a month |
| Fifties | about £120 to £240 a month |
| At or near sixty | about £180 to £360 a month |
The bands are deliberately wide, because postcode, excess, hospital list, out-patient limit and underwriting route all move a premium, and a quote can fall outside them either way. The bottom of a band is not a promise. For a yearly figure, multiply a band by twelve. Two adults of different ages sit between the rows, and the older of the two will tend to pull the total upwards. Across the market a higher excess usually brings the premium down, and a smaller out-patient limit or narrower hospital list tends to do the same; how far for you, and for Bupa in particular, is only visible in a quote.
Ask for the figure on your own two ages, with the excess written on it, split by person and also as a single policy. Getting that from Bupa and from other insurers on matching settings is the sort of job a broker does routinely, and the enquiry form beside this text is the way to ask for it without paying. Bupa health insurance prices: what goes into them sorts out the different things people mean by a Bupa price, and Bupa health insurance: getting a quote compares going to Bupa directly with going through a broker.
Bupa couples discount: what to ask
"Bupa couples discount" is a common search on this subject. Whether Bupa gives a discount for two people on one policy or for a long-standing member, or adds a loading for a second adult, depends on the quote, so ask the broker when they ring; there is no charge.
The question to put to whoever is quoting: is the premium for two adults on one policy lower, the same or higher than two single policies with identical settings, and is any difference down to a named discount that could be withdrawn at renewal? If the answer names a discount, ask what it depends on. A quote that cites a saving is only comparable with another if the same cover and the same excess sit behind both.
If one of you joins later, or you part
Some couples reach Bupa one at a time: one already holds a policy, and the other is added after a marriage or a move. How a second adult is brought in halfway through a policy year, whether the newcomer starts with their own policy year or joins the running one, and whether they are underwritten when they join all turn on the policy, as do taking one member off if a relationship ends and whether the person who leaves keeps the terms they were accepted on.
Settle each of those before the second person is added rather than afterwards; the broker's call-back, which is free, is the place to go through them. Ask in particular whether the first member's terms change when a partner joins, and whether the partner who leaves could take out a policy of their own on the same footing. Bupa health insurance: cancelling a policy deals with ending cover, and private health insurance for couples looks at the cover itself rather than its cost.
Searches that are really about couples' therapy or counselling
Several searches in this area use the word "couples" for something other than insurance: couples therapy, couples counselling, a couples therapist. Bupa's guide says the member can use Direct Access for mental health, among other areas, and "call us about your symptoms without needing a referral from a GP" (page 6). It is written about a member's symptoms.
That line does not mention relationship counselling. Whether Bupa would pay for therapy attended by two people, or count a session one partner takes about the relationship as treatment of a member's condition, depends on the policy. If this is what you came for, ask Bupa in writing whether it would pay, for how many sessions and with which practitioners, before you book. Bupa mental health cover is the page for the wider question of therapy through Bupa, and it is worth reading before you buy a policy mainly for that reason.
Questions couples ask about Bupa
Can two of us be on one Bupa policy?
Bupa's guide speaks of members and a main member, which fits a policy with more than one person on it. Ask Bupa who qualifies as a partner and whether a quote can be priced as one policy and as two.
Do we pay one excess or two?
Bupa's worked example follows one member, who pays one excess in the policy year, and it does not show what happens when a second member claims. Ask Bupa whether each of you carries an excess, or the pair of you carry one, and put the same question to any other insurer you compare.
Does my partner's health affect my cover?
Bupa's guide says pre-existing conditions "aren't usually covered" and sends confirmation of special conditions to the main member. Whether one member's history alters another's terms depends on the policy, so ask that question outright.
Does Bupa give couples a discount?
Any discount would show on the quote, so ask for the premium for two adults on one policy and for two separate policies, with matching settings.
How much is Bupa health insurance for a couple?
Bupa's price depends on your two ages and the settings you choose. The indicative market ranges in the table above, such as about £80 to £150 a month between two adults in their forties, are not Bupa's and not a quote; only a quote on your own two ages gives Bupa's price.
Does Bupa cover couples counselling?
Bupa's guide lets a member call about mental health symptoms through Direct Access, but that line does not mention couples or relationship counselling, so whether it is paid for depends on the policy. Once you have completed the form, the broker's call can set out where you stand, at no cost; have Bupa's answer in writing before booking anything.
Does private health insurance cover counselling in general?
It depends on the insurer and the policy. For Bupa, see the two answers above; for anyone else, ask what is covered, how many sessions, and whether a referral is needed.
If you are weighing Bupa for the two of you, the next step is a single set of details and a request for both versions priced: one policy and two, with the excess and out-patient limit written on each line. Enter them in the enquiry form and a broker can set Bupa against others, line by line.
