Membership of Benenden Health costs £15.85 for each person every month, according to the healthcare page on Benenden's own website, read on 29 October 2026. That is one flat fee rather than a quote, so most of this page is about what the fee does and does not settle. If you are weighing a flat monthly fee against private medical insurance priced on your age and health, an FCA-authorised broker can lay out the insurance half of that comparison. The figure Benenden prints, and where it appears

On the healthcare page, Benenden answers the question in one line: "Benenden Healthcare currently costs £15.85 per person, per month." Its membership page repeats the figure for adding other people: "You can add as many people as you like to your membership for only £15.85 per person, per month." Its home page is looser, saying "Less than £16 per person, per month", so a pound figure to the penny is best taken from the healthcare page, not the headline.

Two things follow from "per person". Three people on one membership are three people at the per-person rate. And the fee is for membership of a healthcare scheme that is not insurance: Benenden's healthcare page says it "is not traditional private medical insurance", and its guide (July 2025 edition) defines the "Cost of membership" as the monthly cost charged to members, which the rulebook calls a contribution.

Does the Benenden fee change?

Benenden says two different things about movement in the price, and they are worth keeping apart.

  • Using the services. Its healthcare FAQ says it "does not increase your membership price just because you use its healthcare services", and its home page lists "No price increase based on age, or each time you use our services".
  • Reviews for everyone. The same FAQ says "the membership price may be reviewed for all members from time to time", and Benenden's guide says it regularly reviews the cost of membership and will let members know in advance of any change.

The rulebook is the document behind both: it says the contribution for each product "shall be such sum as shall be determined by the Board". So a price that does not rise with your claims or birthdays can still rise for the whole membership, with notice. That is a different thing from a guaranteed price, and Benenden does not describe it as one. If you want the mechanics on the insurance side, see your health insurance renewal price.

What the monthly fee does and does not add up to

Benenden's home page adds that there is "no excess to pay" when you need its services. That is about what you pay at the point of use; the limits on what the fee buys sit elsewhere. Benenden's Insurance Product Information Document says it will "only fund diagnostic costs up to £2,500", and that surgical treatment is limited to its approved procedures list, with excluded examples that include joint replacements and surgery related to cancer, heart or brain conditions.

Timing matters to what a month of membership has bought you. The helplines run from day one; medical diagnostics, physiotherapy and mental health support are available to request after six months, and surgical treatment after six or 24 months depending on where you live and when you joined. Benenden also says its services are provided on a discretionary basis, so the Board decides what is available, apart from tuberculosis treatment, which is insured. The services themselves are laid out on what Benenden Health covers.

Paying: monthly, quarterly, annually, or from your salary

The Insurance Product Information Document says members can pay by "Monthly, quarterly, or annual Direct Debit", or annually by credit or debit card, and that membership may be paid from salary or pension if that is set up with Benenden.

Keeping payments up to date carries more weight than with most subscriptions. Benenden's guide says that if payment falls behind, "you won't be able to request or use our services - even if we've already authorised a service". On leaving, you have 14 days from receiving your first welcome pack to cancel with a refund of payments made; after that, you stay a member until the last day of that month, and a quarterly or annual payer is refunded for any whole months left. How to cancel Benenden Health has the steps.

A flat fee next to how insurance is priced

The structural difference is that Benenden's price is the same for each person who joins, while private medical insurance is priced for the individual. Benenden describes joining as one monthly fee without a lengthy quote process, and with no medical questionnaire. A private medical insurance premium usually moves with age, postcode, the excess you choose, the hospital list and the underwriting route; our guide to what health insurance costs in the UK explains each factor.

As a rough guide to the insurance market only, indicative ranges as at October 2026 are about £40 to £80 monthly for one adult in their forties and about £60 to £120 for one in their fifties, assuming a moderate excess and mid-range cover that includes out-patient benefit. Those broad indicative figures are not quotes from any insurer, and they are not a like-for-like comparison with Benenden's £15.85: insurance usually pays for a wider range of treatment, while Benenden's fee buys a defined set of discretionary services with limits such as the £2,500 diagnostics cap. Your own insurance price depends on your age, health and choices. If you want insurance prices that reflect your age and health, a broker can run quotes on a free call-back.

Costs outside the monthly fee

Some treatment will sit outside what the membership funds, so the fee is not the whole spend for every member. Benenden offers members discounted self-pay treatment at its own hospital in Kent and at connected hospitals. At Benenden Hospital, its self-pay page says members get "up to 20% discount" on treatments over £1,000, that procedures under £1,000 are excluded from the discount, and that each provider sets its own self-pay prices. Those are cash prices, quoted by the provider and paid on top of the monthly fee.

Benenden also sells a separate health cash plan, which its own page prices "from £11.32 to £127.89 per month" across five levels. That is a different product with a different job: a cash plan pays money back on everyday items such as dental and optical. Our health cash plan costs page covers what those plans look like in general.

Common questions about the Benenden monthly price

Will my Benenden price go up as I get older?

Benenden's home page says there is no price increase based on age. The membership price can still be reviewed for all members from time to time, with advance notice.

Do children pay the same as adults?

The fee is printed "per person", and Benenden lets the paying member bring in family or friends of any age, so a child added to a membership is one more person at that rate. Anyone joining as a member in their own right must be 16 or over and live in the UK.

Is there a medical questionnaire or a higher price for existing conditions?

Benenden says there is no medical questionnaire when you join, and that pre-existing conditions do not stop you joining. It also says access to individual services is still subject to the relevant criteria and qualifying periods.

Is the price the same if I pay through my employer?

Benenden's membership page says its app can be used whether you pay for yourself or your employer pays. If your employer pays, its benefits team can tell you whether anything comes out of your pay, and whether Benenden is a taxable benefit covers the tax side.

Does living in Northern Ireland change what the fee gets me?

The difference Benenden's product information document sets out for Northern Ireland is timing: a resident who joined on or after 19 February 2024 can request surgical treatment after 24 months, against six months for residents of England, Scotland and Wales.

Putting the price in context before you join

The monthly fee is only one input to the decision. Whether it suits you depends on which services you would use, how long Benenden's waiting periods and NHS wait thresholds would leave you waiting, and how the membership sits beside any insurance you already hold or are considering. When insurance is one of the options you are weighing, the same enquiry form lets a broker ring you and talk you through insurance options at no cost. Benenden's healthcare page is the place to confirm the current fee before you join, since the Board can review it.
