Benenden Health membership covers a set list of services rather than insuring treatment: a 24/7 GP line, mental health help and two advice services from day one, then, after six months, medical diagnostics up to £2,500, physiotherapy, short-term mental health support, cancer advice, tuberculosis treatment and operations from an approved list (24 months for some Northern Ireland members). Benenden decides on each request itself and says it is "not traditional private medical insurance". Individual membership is bought from Benenden itself, so the form on this page cannot get you a Benenden price. If what you want is a policy that pays for private hospital treatment, an FCA-authorised broker can set insurers' quotes side by side; the enquiry form on this page gets you a free call-back. The comparison and the verdict are on Benenden vs private medical insurance and Is Benenden Health worth it?.

What you can use from the first day of membership

Four services start on joining, as Benenden's guide (July 2025 edition, still the version served on 29 October 2026) sets out.

  • 24/7 GP Helpline. A telephone or video appointment with a UK-based GP at any hour. You can book for yourself, your partner, your children (below the age of 19 or in full-time education) or anyone you hold a legal power of attorney for, even if they are not members. The doctor can only issue private prescriptions, and you pay for the medicine and delivery.
  • 24/7 Mental Health Helpline. Immediate emotional support and signposting for mild to moderate problems such as stress, anxiety, low mood and bereavement, with advice on relationship, legal and debt worries. It is for people aged 11 or over, and under-16s need a parent or guardian with them when they call.
  • Adult Care Advice Service. Advisers who explain care options and state funding. It is advice only: Benenden does not arrange or fund the care.
  • Neurodiversity and Disability Advice Service. An adviser who answers questions and signposts support, with or without a diagnosis.

Benenden's guide says its healthcare "is designed for everyday health needs and not to help with emergencies or urgent referrals". The GP line does not assess your condition when you book, so for something urgent the guide points you to 111 or 999. The GP line cannot issue repeat prescriptions, and a referral from it does not unlock Benenden's other services.

After six months: diagnostics, physiotherapy, mental health support and cancer advice

Five more services can be requested after six months: the four below, and Help for Tuberculosis, which pays for approved TB treatment and is the one service Benenden provides on an insured basis. Surgery has its own section.

ServiceWhat Benenden says it providesWhat you need first
Medical DiagnosticsSpecialist consultations and tests such as MRI and CT scans, X-rays and camera investigations, up to £2,500An NHS referral, and an NHS wait longer than 3 weeks
PhysiotherapyAn assessment, then a home exercise plan or treatment sessions, up to 6 sessionsAn assessment through the app or by phone
Mental Health SupportA telephone assessment, then up to 6 counselling sessions or a guided self-help programme based on CBTA call to Benenden to see if it can help
Cancer Advice ServiceAn introductory call with a nurse, then 8 further calls of up to 20 minutes with a care teamA request to Benenden

Benenden says that once a request is authorised it can "support your diagnostic costs up to £2,500", paying approved costs direct, and the diagnosis appointments have to happen inside six months of that go-ahead. It does not cover second opinions, diagnostic tests under general anaesthetic, pregnancy-related appointments, cosmetic concerns, pain management or invasive angiograms. It also does not help where, in its view, it may be safer for you to stay with the NHS, and it gives psychiatry and a suspected cancer diagnosis as examples. Where the specialty is joints or skin, an approved request starts with an assessment to work out how Benenden can best help.

Physiotherapy is not designed for severe, long-term or recurring conditions, and Mental Health Support is not offered if you already receive support from an NHS or private therapist or psychiatrist. Benenden also cannot start, monitor or review mental health medication.

Benenden describes the Cancer Advice Service as practical and emotional help that sits beside, and does not replace, the guidance and treatment you get from the NHS or a private consultant. It is not available to members under 18 or for basal cell carcinomas.

Surgical treatment: the approved list, and a different wait in Northern Ireland

The surgical service opens after six months for people living in England, Scotland or Wales when they join. For a Northern Ireland resident whose membership began on or after 19 February 2024 the wait is 24 months, and moving away does not shorten it; for earlier joiners from there it is six months.

Benenden says it can help when the NHS wait for an operation is more than 5 weeks, and only for operations on its approved procedure list. The list, which Benenden showed as correct as of 24 July 2026, runs to over 250 procedures across six areas: ear, nose and throat, general surgery, gynaecology, ophthalmology (cataracts only), orthopaedic and urology. Hernia repairs and carpal tunnel release are among the entries. Benenden chooses operations that are "relatively simple", mostly need under 24 hours in hospital and do not need repeat procedures.

What it leaves out is stated just as plainly: "Brain, heart and cancer, which the NHS already does well", plus cosmetic surgery, joint replacements and varicose veins. Benenden says on its procedures page that "although a procedure is listed, this does not constitute a guarantee that we will provide the procedure in every circumstance", and that it can change the list without prior notice.

The rules that sit over every service

Benenden's guide and its Insurance Product Information Document set these limits.

  • Discretion. Benenden's guide puts it this way: "We work on a discretionary basis. This means that our Board decides which services are provided and what’s available in each service." Tuberculosis treatment is the exception, covered on an insured basis.
  • Approval first. Benenden does not refund services you arranged before it authorised them. The helplines and Mental Health Support are the exceptions.
  • One request open. Physiotherapy, Medical Diagnostics and Surgical Treatment are authorised for a single set of health concerns at a time.
  • Two-year gap. A second request for a problem in the same part of the body is refused if Benenden first backed treatment for it within the previous two years.
  • No upkeep. Check-ups and treatment that monitor an ongoing condition are not paid for, and Benenden says it offers no continuing support for long-term conditions.
  • Approved network. Diagnosis and treatment happen in Benenden's approved network of hospitals and clinics. Members living within its calculation of a two-hour drive of Benenden Hospital in Kent are sent there, if it offers what they need.

Dental, eyes and feet: where the cash plan comes in

Dental treatment and check-ups are not among the services listed in Benenden's guide. Where the guide mentions dental care, it is to say membership lets you buy the Benenden Health Cash Plan, which "helps with everyday healthcare costs such as dental check-ups and eye tests". That plan is a separate insurance product with its own premium, not part of the membership: BHSF Limited is the insurer, and Benenden sells it only to members. Of its five levels, Level 5 has yearly limits of £250 each for dental, optical and chiropody (chiropody repaid at 50%), and Level 1 has £50 for dental and £52.50 for optical. Level 1 single cover was £11.32 a month on 29 October 2026. See also health cash plans versus private health insurance and dental cover on private health insurance.

Eyes are a narrow case. Cataract surgery is on the approved list, with a standard monofocal lens only, and Benenden's guide says a referral from an optician may be accepted for cataract diagnostics. Routine sight tests are not among the services in the guide.

Who is covered: pre-existing conditions, family and employer schemes

Anyone aged 16 or over who ordinarily lives in the UK (not the Isle of Man or Channel Islands) can join. A paying member can add friends and family of any age, for an extra cost. People added get the same services as the paying member.

On pre-existing conditions Benenden says: "Pre-existing medical conditions do not stop you from joining Benenden Health, and there's no medical questionnaire when you join. Access to individual healthcare services is still subject to the relevant service criteria and qualifying periods." For how insurers handle the same issue, see Private health insurance with a pre-existing condition.

If membership comes through an employer, or you were added to someone else's workplace membership, Benenden says the approved procedure list "may be different for you". Scans, cancer, joints and operations: specific cover questions

Does Benenden Health cover MRI scans?

Yes, within Medical Diagnostics after six months, up to the £2,500 limit, once Benenden authorises it on an NHS referral with an NHS wait over 3 weeks.

Does Benenden cover cancer treatment?

No. Benenden names cancer, with brain and heart conditions, as treatment it does not replicate from the NHS, and its Cancer Advice Service gives guidance and emotional support rather than paying for treatment.

Does Benenden cover hip or knee replacements?

No. Benenden names joint replacements among the treatments it does not cover; its orthopaedic list holds simpler operations such as carpal tunnel release.

Does Benenden Health cover prostate surgery, dermatology or menopause care?

Some prostate operations are on the urology part of the procedure list, among them prostatic urethral lift implants and transurethral water vapour ablation of the prostate; whether yours qualifies depends on its CCSD code, the NHS wait and Benenden's approval. Skin (dermatology) is named in the guide as a diagnostics specialty where an approved request starts with an assessment. Menopause care is not one of the services the guide lists. For anything specific, check benenden.co.uk/our-procedures or ask Benenden on 0300 304 5700.

What if the operation I need is not on Benenden's list?

Benenden will not fund it, and where an operation needs several CCSD codes, every one of them has to be on the approved list. The NHS route stays open to you. For private cover in future, which depending on the policy can reach treatments Benenden does not provide, our FCA-authorised broker partner can price policies from the insurers it deals with; for that, the form on this page books its call-back at no cost.
