You cancel Benenden Health membership by telling Benenden yourself, by phone, email or letter, with your membership number. Cancel within 14 days of receiving your first welcome pack and any payments are refunded; after that, membership stops at the end of the month in which you cancel. Heading for an insurance policy rather than staying with Benenden? An FCA-authorised broker will talk you through the insurers they work with when they phone you after the form on this page. If you joined through a workplace or corporate scheme, the scheme handles your cancellation instead, as explained further down.
Who to contact, and what to include
Benenden's July 2025 member guide lists three ways to cancel: call 0800 414 8480, email memberrelations@benenden.co.uk, or write to the Membership Team, Benenden Health, Holgate Park Drive, York, YO26 4GG. The guide asks you to "include your membership number in any emails or letters", so have it to hand before you start. The product information document, which carries the print code RET/LEGAL/B2CIPID/7391WRAPPED/10/25/V1, gives the same three routes.
A short checklist helps: your membership number, the date you want to be out by, and how you pay (the answer changes what you need to do next, as below). If you ring, jot down who answered and when. Keep a copy of anything you post or email. As the next section shows, the date Benenden receives your notice decides when membership stops.
When membership stops: the 14-day window and the end-of-month rule
There are two timings, and which applies depends on how long you have been a member.
| When you cancel | What Benenden's guide says happens |
|---|---|
| Within 14 days of getting your first welcome pack | Benenden will refund any payments made. |
| After those 14 days | Membership ends at the end of the month in which you cancel, and payments stop then. |
In the guide's words: "If you cancel after the initial 14-day period, your membership will stop at the end of the month you cancel in, and your payments will stop at that time." What counts is the month, not the day: the product information document says cancellations take effect at the end of the month in which Benenden receives them, so notice that arrives on the 1st and notice that arrives on the 30th end membership on the same date. A letter posted in the last days of a month could land in the next one and add a month, so phone or email if time is short.
Paying monthly, quarterly, annually or through pay or pension
How you pay changes what happens to money already paid.
- Paid quarterly or annually in advance: the guide says "we’ll refund the cost of any full months you’ve paid for already."
- Paid by Direct Debit each month: payments stop when membership ends, at the end of the month you cancel in.
- Paid from your salary or pension: the product information document tells you to "advise your payroll or pension department to stop any further payments to us", so telling Benenden is not the whole job.
If you are unsure how your own payments are set up, the schedule Benenden sent when you joined, or its membership team, will confirm it. The current price and how it has changed are covered in how much Benenden Health costs a month.
Stopping payments is not the same as cancelling
It can be tempting to cancel the Direct Debit and leave it there. That is not the route Benenden sets out. Its guide says "Your membership will continue unless payments stop, or we cancel your membership", and warns that if a payment method is cancelled, withdrawn or stopped and payments fall behind, "you won’t be able to request or use our services – even if we’ve already authorised a service."
The Society's Memorandum and Rules (issue date 14 November 2025) go further: where contributions are not made as the product terms require, the Society may suspend your benefits or terminate membership at the end of the period you have paid for. So a missed payment is Benenden's decision to act on, not a tidy way out for you. Cancel through one of the three routes above, then let the payment stop.
Using Benenden services in your final weeks
The guide says: "When you cancel, you’ll still be able to use and request services until the end of the month, covered by your last payment."
If Benenden has already authorised a scan, an operation or a course of physiotherapy that would fall after your end date, ring the membership team on 0800 414 8480 before you send notice, ask whether it will still go ahead, and keep the answer in writing. The guide links access to the month your last payment covers, so do not assume authorised help carries on beyond it.
If you joined through an employer or a scheme
The guide says that if you joined through a corporate scheme, "you’ll need to tell your scheme to cancel your membership", and the scheme handles any refunds. For an employer's flexible benefits scheme, it says your right to cancel "may be restricted by the rules of that scheme". In that case, start with your HR or benefits team, not Benenden. If the cover is being offered by your employer more widely, cancelling private health insurance sets out how leaving a group arrangement differs from leaving a personal one.
Before you cancel: what you would be giving up
Apart from tuberculosis cover, which is insured, Benenden provides its services on a discretionary basis decided by its Board, and for most of them a member has to wait six months from joining (24 months for surgical treatment for some people who joined while living in Northern Ireland on or after 19 February 2024). Coming back is not ruled out: under the Society's Memorandum and Rules, anyone over 16 and normally resident in the UK is eligible to apply, although acceptance is at the Board's discretion, and a member the Board has expelled can be barred from re-applying. Whether the qualifying periods would start again if you rejoined is a question to put to Benenden before you leave.
If you are weighing Benenden against a conventional policy, Benenden compared with private medical insurance lays out how the two differ, whether Benenden Health is worth it looks at the conditions on the services, and what Benenden Health covers goes through them one by one. Moving to a policy raises its own questions about waiting periods and existing conditions; the broker who rings you after the form on this page is filled in can go through them without charge.
Cancelling Benenden: other questions
Can I cancel Benenden Health at any time?
Yes. Once the 14 days after your first welcome pack have passed, membership ends at the end of whichever month Benenden receives your notice in.
Will I get a refund if I cancel?
Within the first 14 days, any payments are refunded. After that, only full months already paid for in advance under a quarterly or annual arrangement are refunded, according to the guide.
Can Benenden cancel my membership?
Yes, in set circumstances. The guide says that if you verbally or physically abuse or threaten its staff or representatives, it "may refuse further services and cancel your membership", and that misusing its funds or knowingly giving false information can also lead to cancellation. Under the Society's rules, a member can also be expelled on those grounds, and non-payment can lead to suspension or termination.
Can I cancel online?
The guide gives phone, email and post as the ways to cancel. If you would rather do it through your online account or the app, ask the membership team whether that is accepted before relying on it.
